Monthly Meetup at Old Arlington Grill

Biggest Meetup of 2008 to get ready for the biggest Volunteer Project of 2008!

Arlington Community Role Models - new name soon to be announced - is hosting their monthly happy hour for community minded 20 and 30 somethings in the Arlington area tomorrow night at the Old Arlington Grill (connected to Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse).

The fun starts at 7 pm and with over 30 people already RSVP'd it should be a good time.

We will have a couple of guests - one from Cherrydale Health and Rehabilitation as well as one from Community Residences.

We will also have sign ups for upcoming activities like Saturday's Community Residences Cleanup; the Turkey Trot 5K; Pictures with Santa and Elves; and the OAR Wrapping Party.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Which Party Are You (..going to..)?

So we know that young people in Arlington generally love politics and love an excuse for a party... so tomorrow night should be huge!

Here's a small sampling of how some people will be partying:
The Arlington Young Dems, Arlington County Democratic Party, and the Joint Campaign are teaming up for one big shindig at Baileys in Ballston. Party starts at 7 pm.

The Arlington GOP will be watching the results come in at Mister Days in Clarendon.

NOVA & DC Urban League Young Professionals are at Bistro Bistro in Shirlington starting at 6 pm.

And then from the Going Out Gurus blog...
Busboys and Poets is hosting an election night party which will be heavy on the Democrat side.
They will apparently have "14 political cocktails on the menu, including the "Delaware Dude" for Joe Biden and the "Todd-Todd Palin" for the first dude of Alaska."

Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse will be showing election returns on the big screen. 20 beers on tap and who knows who will show up!

Let us know if you hear of other Election Night Parties in Arlington.

Two Scary Movies - Two Bucks

This bit from one of my favorite Arlington sites - Night Out ...

Two Scary Movies - Two Bucks

It's fright night at the Arlington Cinema 'N Drafthouse! Join fellow Halloween revelers in two classic scary movies: "Shaun of the Dead" (7:30 pm) and "Halloween" (9:50 pm). Both movies are $1 each, so it's a super cheap way to freak yourself out for an evening, if that's what you're looking to do.

Live Earth Comes to Arlington

UPDATE: My review of Live Earth at Giants Stadium is up at The Green Miles

The Green Miles will be packing up the Purple Car tomorrow and driving up to New Jersey for the Live Earth climate change awareness concert at Giants Stadium.

But it turns out you don't have to leave Arlington to get the Live Earth experience! The venerable Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse will be hosting a live broadcast of the concert. You can buy tickets at the Drafthouse's website.

Here are all the details:

5PM to 11PM
Watch the World Wide Broadcast of the Live Earth Concert at the Drafthouse

Get your Earth on Arlington! Join community members for a free “sustainability fest” and “concert streaming” of the history making LiveEarth concerts. LiveEarth (www.LiveEarth.org) is 24 hour, 7-continent series of 9 concerts taking place on 7-7-07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to “answer the call” and combat the climate crisis.

USA concert artists include The Police, AFI, Dave Mathews, Foo Fighters, Alesia Keyes, John Mayer, Ludicris, Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Etheridge, and many more. “Rock the Earth” will also feature the best of green businesses and organizations displaying and demonstrating how easy it is to go green.

This event, sponsored by Defenders of Wildlife is envisioned to help create a sustainable future for the Washington DC Area with dazzling visuals, rockin’ music, sustainability resources and eco-displays.

Arl. Cinema & Drafthouse: I'm Gonna Need Ya to Come in on Thursday

Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse is hosting its Bi-Annual TPS Report Managers Meeting (a.k.a. the Office Space Movie Festival) on Thursday starting at 7pm! For $7, you get:

7pm: DJ Video Mix featuring songs from the movie
7:45pm: Trivia contest

8pm: Lumbergh impersonation contest
8:10pm: "O" face contest
8:20pm: Costume contest
8:30pm: Office Space starts
If you've never been to the Drafthouse, this is a great excuse to check it out. I honestly prefer to wait for the big blockbusters to come to the Drafthouse before seeing them. That way, if they're a disappointment (I'm looking at you, Spider-Man 3) you're only out $5 instead of $10. And really, any movie is better when there are chili fries and beer involved.

The Drafthouse also plays an important role in the Arlington community. It's locally owned, and is constantly hosting neighborhood events like
DC Idol, so it's worth supporting.

So if you could just go ahead and make sure you do that from now on, that will be great. And, uh, I'll go ahead and make sure you get another copy of that memo, mmmkay?

Green Science Drafting from DVDs after Mardis Gras

No, that title doesn't make sense, but here's what it's about:

*Green - not for Kermit the Frog, but for the Arlington Green Living Challenge -- win prizes (hey who says we're only motivated by the cause!) and be certified as a "green household" by earning points through any combination of 16 simple actions.

* Science - Sticking with the green theme, the next Cafe Scientifique sounds very interesting - the subject, "The 'Shocking' Science Behind Electric Cars" -- with actual cars to touch! Now, how are they getting those in the Front Page - Tuesday, March 6, 6- 8 PM (presentation starts at 6:30). FREE! No science background required.

* Drafting - as in Arlington Cinema Drafthouse and as in the "We Like the Pike" Event on Tuesday, February 27, 5- 7 PM. FREE admission includes live music, complimentary buffet, cash bar, plus get 2 FREE passes for movies or entertainment at any 2007 DraftHouse event - that alone makes the trip worth it.

* DVDs- I've bragged before about how great Arlington libraries are. I just got my e-mail about new DVDs at the library and I thought I would share some (but not the ones I really want ;-) ) -- Babel, The Departed, Fast Food Nation, Man of the Year, Rocky Balboa ... and more. - You too can stay in the loop by signing up to receive this e-newsletter on the libraries website (I can't find exactly where right now, but I did it, so I'm sure you can find it too).

*After Mardis Gras -I couldn't go to the Clarenendon parade this year. I had a board meeting for an organization I'm involved with. Grrr! Did anyone make it? It was great last year.
